Description

Both mobile phones and laptop PCs are trying to turn themselves into portable always-Net-connected devices — but everyday utility-driven issues like screen size, weight, and the need for keyboards will prevent them from becoming a mass-market solution. Instead, a third category will emerge: the mobile Internet device — designed from the ground up with Wi-Fi, touch-screens, and several killer apps in mind (navigation systems, Web browsing, education) — these devices have a bright future. But getting there will take time, as witnessed by the failure of the initial devices to target this category.

Agenda

  • The out-and-about Net-connected device: Why phones and laptops don’t cut it.
  • Defining the mobile Internet device.
  • Form factors, killer apps, and the competition.
  • Time frame for success.

Vendors mentioned: Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, OLPC initiative, and Pepper Computers.
