You've probably seen the 90s documentary that covered Jobs vs. Gates, I think entitled Revenge of the Nerds. There's a point where Jobs says something like, "the thing about Microsoft is... well, they just don't have any taste!" The emphasis on elegant design is now serving Apple well, while others (e.g. Dell's player) continue to put out products that look like they were designed 10 years ago.
