Indeed, I hope that Apple will continue to push the boundaries and explore other opportunities in the CE space ¿ phones, cameras and beyond. The incumbents have yet to realise the severity of their need for great software and services to complement their hardware offerings (again iPod + iTunes) ¿ further reinforcing the window of opportunity for Apple.
I had first presented such a complementary strategy (1+1=3) to one of the leading CE manufacturers some five years ago but our proposal fell on deaf ears in those relatively early days of the web. It has been extremely gratifying to see Apple succeed where others feared to tread.
One area of personal interest would be to see Apple¿s take on the PVR and media server ¿ undoubtedly the holy grail of future devices where the PC and CE industries are battling for supremacy. Here however, I have been extremely impressed by developments in the Wintel camp as well as others and I am not sure how Apple would fare.
As you mentioned in your QuickTake, Apple¿s game is now squarely in the consumer arena and not the enterprise one. This means that its future growth in the PC world will continue to be restricted while the CE world may offer similar riches to those unearthed by the iPod. This is an area where I believe that Apple could have a huge impact and alter the current balance of power.
Perhaps its not surprising then that Sony have been frequent visitors to Apple headquarters. As Tom Socket mentions though, it doesn¿t seem to have inspired much of their efforts on the Connect front¿
Any company intending to become a serious player in the accelerating digital convergence stage had better not be sitting idle in the next couple of years!
