With Bill Gates, if he sees anything as a threat to his expansion and stronghold he will outmuscle his competitor. This is a given and Mr. Gates rarely fails when he does this.

But if you live by the sword, you die by the sword (the sword is the international digital explostion fueled and enabled by the Internet).

Soon, Asia will develop it's own operating system by way of a consortium -- their concern: they want a secure and free operating system for their billions of people. Mr. Gates tempts these countries by driving the international price of his software down (perhaps even gives Windows away in such cases). Can the consortium still accomplish this feat? Probably so since the consortium governments will collectively fund this and only hire the best -- this will be a huge step up from the non-paid effort of open-source projects like Linux which have less traction as a threat to Windows. As for the threat of the Jobs appliances -- yes, this is a threat but Bill Gates continually hones and improves Windows CE so that there will be a compelling case for such appliances to need to license his software -- that should be enough to make him happy -- let their be millions of Jobs devices but make sure Windows CE is so good and compelling that either Jobs himself is compelled to use it or Jobs competitors will use it and outperform/outshine Jobs products. We'll see.
