Changing center of gravity

Agree with the power of nomenclature to drive behavior and also agree with the term "Business Technology" as being more appropriate than Information Technology.

However, let me offer a slightly different angle to this. IT has split into Business Technology and Personal Technology. And the center of gravity is moving towards Personal Technology.

What is Personal Technology? Everything from email to chat to storing music and photographs on your computer/internet to your blog to online gaming to the ATM machine for withdrawing cash.

This is not to suggest that there will be less of Business Technology; we produce more food than we ever did in the Agriculture Age. And surely, BT and PT will interwine as BT leverages PT for business.

But the changing center of gravity has other implications. Will BT be a more powerful magnet for talent than PT? Will understanding consumer behavior become more important than technology skills? How will the "balance of power" game play out amongst the "great powers" of erstwhile IT? Where will consolidation happen and where do you look for new players to emerge?

IT resided in the large computer rooms and its driver was number crunching. BT moved it to the desktop and it's driver is business productivity. PT has moved it from the desktop into our lives and it's driver is quality of life.

thanks
Aditya
