A New BET Era

Certainly anything we can do to draw the various Business industries and IT industry together has to be a noble endeavour. In practice it has been difficult to bridge this chasm of sorts, and indeed many of tenants of agility are founded on the premise that agility will only be achieved if systems are responsive to the business need.

The primary stumbling block of course is the language and tools used by both business and IT to express and interpret those needs. And we have to be careful that this is not driven too strongly from the technologists point of view. Examples that come to mind are BEPL, SOA, AJAX, MDA, XPDL, BPDM etc, and then we have Business Process Management Business Process Management (BPM) and Systems (BPMS) that will benefit from a services approach to architecture. All these acroynms represent technologies that abstract and simplify IT in one way or another and are an important component of the overall initiative.

Now, whether or not any of the terms Business Technology (BT) Business Information Systems (BIS) , Business Information Technology (BIT), or Business Information Services (BIS), or whatever will encourage further change, it is impossible to predict, but suely if the industry does evangalise the new era, we are in with a chance. You know, the more I think of what we are talking about here is Business Enabling Services (BES) or Business Enabling Technology (BET) - now that acronym would truly capture what essence of the partnership.
