The Forrester Wave™: Key Opinion Leader Management Platforms, Q2 2006
Pharma sales and marketing executives are struggling to rein in costs -- without losing influence among physicians. Key opinion leaders (KOLs) have long been a component of pharma's strategy, but clients have told us that engagements with KOLs have been largely haphazard and poorly managed. And to top it off, these relationships cross organizational boundaries that are not often bridged by processes, personnel, or systems. To help pharma marketing execs identify the best partner for managing KOL relationships, we evaluated leading KOL management platform vendors across 52 criteria and found that Cadient Group, Exploria, Heartbeat Software, openQ, and Skila lead the pack, though each has very different strengths. Oracle is also in the running, and Voltage, despite its formidable KOL consulting strength, lags behind the rest of the market's technology capabilities.

KOL Management Priorities Defined
As a follow up to the Forrester Wave evaluation, we conducted a small survey of marketing executives at leading life sciences companies. There was no doubt about the importance of KOL management: All of the executives we surveyed classified KOL relationship management as somewhat (three respondents) or extremely (six respondents) important to their company's overall sales and marketing strategy. We also asked respondents to rank platform capabilities, and several capabilities clearly rose to the top.
Online Health Risk Assessments Are Gateways To Care Management
Health risk assessments (HRAs), self-reported questionnaires used to appraise health status and risk of future illness, are gaining consumer attention. More than one in five commercially insured consumers report taking an HRA, and 37% of these HRA takers are doing so online. We analyzed our consumer data and learned heartening information for disease management executives: Nearly three-quarters of consumers who use the online channel to learn of health risks do some research on a medical condition after taking an assessment, and 62% look up prescription information. Health plans should ensure that online HRA takers have a ready path to behavior-change support. Here's one suggestion: Use HRAs as a health management program recruiting tool.
Seven Things Healthcare Consumers Won't Pay $100 For
Think consumers are ready to shoulder health costs? Think again. We asked consumers whether or not they would be willing to pay $100 annually for a range of innovative healthcare products. The overwhelming result? Consumers will need nudging to understand the value of prevention-oriented health products and services. Start by increasing brand credibility by joining the Continua Health Alliance.
Hospital Quality Interests Consumers But Not Enough To Research
A consumer's bark is bigger than her bite when it comes to hospital quality data. A slim 5% of consumers with scheduled hospital stays have visited a hospital's Web site to find out more information about the facility. But don't give up on quality information -- it is still an important point on employers' checklists. Meanwhile, hospital Web site visitors aren't thrilled with their experience. Only 39% of visitors are satisfied with the experience, which is much lower than satisfaction levels for mainstream sites. With usability in shambles, hospital site designers should realize that hospital Web sites must also support a hospital's brand image.
