Six technologies vitalize healthcare interstructure

The gaps in the sprawling and disconnected healthcare industry beg for technology solutions. Just as Visa and MasterCard connect millions of merchants with financial institutions, companies like WebMD, RxHub, and the Global Healthcare Exchange (GHX) are laying the rails for the healthcare industry to work as a closely knit network. Healthcare interstructure is a tricky business: Connectivity initiatives often mature slowly, because the businesses on either side of a transaction wait for the other to commit before buying in, and sometimes they fail for lack of a practical business model. Vendors are stepping into the breach with networks of connectivity, security, and integration built on six key technologies.

(link:doc id:33790) Electronic data capture for clinical trials

Electronic data capture (EDC) promises real-time access to error-free data and major process improvements for clinical trial sponsors and sites. Picking an EDC partner involves choosing an architecture, settling on a suite of clinical software solutions or a standalone EDC product, and selecting a service model ¿ ASP or in-house. Forrester's TechRankings¿ evaluates eight leading EDC players, and delivers the thorough, unbiased, and customizable evaluation that sponsors need to pick a vendor to match their needs. Forrester's EDC TechRankings tool covers eight leading EDC vendors: DataLabs, DATATRAK, eResearchTechnology, etrials, LifeTree Technology, Medidata Solutions, Oracle, and Phase Forward.

Europeans' online health habits revealed

Europeans are researching both OTC health products and drugs online ¿ in some cases, more so than their US counterparts. Sixteen percent of online Europeans have researched health and beauty products on the Net, compared with 10% of US consumers. But European regulations mean that online pharmaceutical purchasing remains a predominantly US activity. In contrast, European regulations and rich national health coverage dampen European online prescription drug research.
