The Forrester Wave™: Hospital Comparison Tools, Q4 2005
The explosion in CDHP enrollment -- from an estimated 2.7 million enrollees in 2005 to more than 12 million enrollees in 2007 -- is forcing health plans to upgrade decision support for their members. The "must-have" feature for this quality-conscious cohort? Online hospital comparison tools. To give direction in a market of commercial and publicly available tools, Forrester evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the top national hospital comparison tool vendors across 29 criteria. The results? Subimo and WebMD lead the pack, offering superior usability as well as greater depth and breadth of data. Other vendors that we included in the evaluation were CMS, HealthGrades, JCAHO, and The Leapfrog Group.

Giving Online Disease Management A Boost
Forrester's Consumer Technographics® data shows that online disease management (DM) programs have a large potential audience. And with 10% of the population accounting for 70% of total US healthcare costs, health plans and employers look to DM programs as potential cost-savings vehicles. But not all chronically ill people are hot targets for online DM. For example, diabetics are about half as likely as those with gastrointestinal conditions to have contacted their plan for online DM.

Pharma Won't Meet ePedigree Deadlines
Overhauling drug-tracing practices still remains a big pill to swallow for pharma. We recently surveyed top pharmaceutical and life science companies on their plans and current use of ePedigree. Even with the midyear 2006 Florida deadline approaching, no firms responding to our survey reported progressing ePedigree beyond early phases. In fact, only one of 13 firms interviewed is currently in the deployment stage of ePedigree. This gives further reason for pharma to embrace authentication to get over the Pedigree hump. This piece also outlines business practices for withstanding the current compliance environment and describes the key accomplishments and issues for ePedigree vendors.
