We are expanding our team and our coverage for clients concerned with managing the technology and processes integral to effective care management. We kick off with two pieces of research and a new analyst, Jennifer Gaudet. Let us know what you think.
Integrated Health Management Will Dismantle Disease Management's Information Barriers
By 2007, two-thirds of all employers that we surveyed plan to offer benefits including disease management (DM). This is a leap from the 45% that currently offer DM. Unfortunately, stovepiped information in health plans today fragments the user experience and leads to disjointed health management. What can health plans do? We recommend changing focus from individual DM programs to integrated health management. An integrated approach incorporates population-based methods and complements other health management offerings to deliver a host of benefits. Start by integrating DM and claims platforms with vendors like EDS, QCSI, or The TriZetto Group. Our recent case study of Delta Air Lines gives encouraging evidence for the benefits of integrated health management.
Say hello to Jenn Gaudet as she joins the ranks of analyst on the healthcare and life sciences team. Jenn will be covering the disease management space as well as prescription benefits management, employer health benefits, healthcare consumer preferences and behaviors, and online health tools. Let Jenn know what you want from her research at jgaudet@forrester.com.

Integrated HSAs: A Road Map For Health Plans
The integration of health savings accounts (HSAs) between health plans and financial services firms has created a pressing need for these partners to get the basics down on service delivery. To create a truly integrated product, start by integrating payment transactions, then focus on business processes, online account management, and online decision support tools. The first priorities should be consumer-facing functions, including getting enrollment, call center, and claims payment processing up to speed by the end of 2006. This report details the entire road map that plans should follow to compete in the growing HSA market.
Decision Support Can Make It . . . And Break It
Beyond cost and coverage, what sways a consumer to go with one plan over another? We found that 75% of consumers are looking beyond the cost-coverage tradeoff. Twenty-nine percent say that the availability of health decision support tools is what tips the scale. Our research shows, however, that drug comparison tools aren't helping consumers. Of the 17% of consumers we surveyed who have used a drug cost comparison tool, less than half said it was easy to use. Usability remains the Achilles' heel of effective decision support -- Forrester's Scenario Design gives smart firms a clear path to building better tools.
Hospital IT And Business Execs Share Technology Buying Decisions
Hospital IT maintains a tighter link with business units compared with other industries when it comes to setting IT strategy, managing accountability, and allocating funding. Vendors that have their sights set on hospitals' growing IT budgets will need to win over both IT and business buyers. Start by having a firm grasp on the business dynamics of healthcare. A $2 billion hospital system that doubles as a Catholic charity will be attracted to business cases that tout access and service wins, not just increased market share.
Reaching eDetailing's Untapped Market
Eighty percent of US physicians and prescribers who haven't participated in an eDetail say it is because they've never been offered one. Ninety-four percent of this group indicate that they are somewhat or very likely to participate in an eDetail if invited in the future. We outline what these prescribers want and expect from an eDetail. The primary reason to participate? eDetailing's scheduling freedom.
We are very interested in your feedback on our research. Do you have topics to recommend, data you would like to have, or technologies you want assessed? Drop me a line at bradholmes@forrester.com so we can connect.
