In the wider context of the rapid adoption of a variety of cloud-based applications, enterprise adoption of software-as-a-service (SaaS) or hosted records management (RM) remains limited. While cost, deployment, and other advantages can be compelling, many information risk management (IRM) professionals lack familiarity with the cloud-based RM market. In addition, they focus on many potential security, legal, and privacy issues as well as vendor and operational concerns. This combination of factors has created a major barrier to adoption. The promise of cloud-based RM makes this delivery model worth consideration, but IRM professionals should carefully investigate vendor capabilities, map out contingency plans, and keep their eye on the fundamentals to establish a successful RM program.
