.NET Versus J2EE: .NET Has Clearly Arrived

Both Application Platforms Are Long-Term Winners

by Randy Heffner

with Carey Schwaber, Mike Gilpin

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

Four years ago, when Microsoft announced .NET as a major new architectural direction for its products, there was a big question as to whether it could get its customers onboard with the change, not to mention whether it could attract new customers. That question has been answered: Microsoft has successfully done both. Forrester asked North American enterprises which one platform they will use for the majority of development work in 2004. .NET is the primary development platform at more firms than J2EE. J2EE is stronger than .NET in the utilities and telecom and finance and insurance industries. .NET is stronger than J2EE in manufacturing; retail and wholesale; media, entertainment, and leisure; business services; and the public sector. Firms that spend a higher percentage of revenue on IT are more likely to do the majority of development on J2EE. And .NET is more often the focus at companies facing weak business climates. From a strategic perspective, notwithstanding these variations in adoption rates, both J2EE and .NET are long-term winners in the market.
