Sun To Acquire SeeBeyond

Deal Strengthens JES, But Merger Execution Is The Main Risk Factor

by Mike Gilpin, John R. Rymer

with Frank E. Gillett, Ken Vollmer

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

Sun Microsystems will acquire SeeBeyond, a vendor of application integration and business process management (BPM) middleware, for $387 million. SeeBeyond's products fill the key hole in Sun's Java Enterprise System platform and are technically compatible with Sun's software. Sun's challenge will be integration of the SeeBeyond engineering and sales organizations with its own. SeeBeyond is a large acquisition for Sun and comes at a time when Sun is already occupied with absorbing Storage Technology. Although the combination promises a stronger and broader application platform suite from Sun, crisp execution will be critical to enabling this promise to be achieved.
