Iron Mountain Acquires LiveVault

Market For Outsourced Storage Services Heats Up

by Stephanie Balaouras

with Laura Koetzle, Sarah Bernhardt

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

On December 1, Iron Mountain — best known for its physical data and records management services — announced its intent to acquire server backup software and subscription services vendor LiveVault. This is Iron Mountain's second acquisition of this kind — in October 2004, Iron Mountain bought Connected, a popular vendor of PC backup software and subscription services. As more and more of the data that enterprises produce and store becomes digital instead of physical, Iron Mountain has been quietly offering outsourced electronic records management and online data protection services to complement its traditional business. The acquisitions of Connected and LiveVault position Iron Mountain to capitalize on the growing trend to outsource storage-related services such as backup and disaster recovery.
