Although fewer than half of the large enterprises in Europe and North America are actively using or piloting open source software, a majority of those are using it for mission-critical applications and infrastructure. While overall use is higher in Europe, North American companies are more likely to have embraced open source for mission-critical use. Media and entertainment and utilities and telecommunications lead other sectors in open source use in both geographies. Skeptics remain in most sectors, but application development professionals should view these results as an indication that companies are finding open source suitable for certain types of critical business applications.
