In 2007, North American enterprises will significantly increase software spending for new software initiatives and projects. Improving integration between applications will be the top priority (27%), followed by upgrading security environments (21%) and adopting service-oriented architecture (SOA) (12%). Business intelligence (BI) software will represent the top application purchase, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) will remain the top major upgrade, while messaging, email, and collaboration software will lead the pack for minor upgrades. Interest in software-as-a-service (SaaS) continues to increase among enterprises, with interest in human resources (HR) applications (54%) and ERP (40%) overtaking customer relationship management (CRM) (38%). In terms of infrastructure software, enterprises continue to invest in security software, and application life-cycle management (ALM) has the highest usage among leading-edge technologies. Software-related outsourcing remains most common among the largest enterprises.
