Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

In January 2006, Forrester surveyed 149 technology decision-makers at North American small and medium-size businesses (SMBs) and enterprises about their approach to IT security; 94 of these respondents were knowledgeable about their client security practices. While client antivirus is almost ubiquitous, our survey shows that companies still want more. Fifty-three percent of companies will invest in client antivirus software, and 45% of companies will invest in personal firewall software in 2006 — bringing client security to more computers throughout the enterprise, not simply to the "at-risk" or mobile systems. This is a necessary enhancement, given that workers are mobile and can carry malicious code back to the corporate network. However, companies still prefer best-of-breed client security technologies over their suite counterparts: a decision that will be costly in terms of administrative overhead as well as overall client protection.
