Network Your Storage With IP

by Stephanie Balaouras

with Galen Schreck, Thomas Powell

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

In November 2005, Forrester conducted a survey of 50 storage and business continuity decision-makers at North American enterprises to assess adoption trends in storage and business continuity technology. Surprisingly, a significant number of enterprises still rely on non-networked storage, such as internal server storage capacity or direct-attached storage, to satisfy capacity requirements. These enterprises have an opportunity to simplify IT operations and lower costs by consolidating multiple, general purpose file and print servers with network-attached storage (NAS). The survey also indicated a healthy adoption of iSCSI storage area network (IP SAN) technologies. Forrester believes that storage capacity for end-user file data, long-term reference data, Web application servers, and even many message and database servers can be satisfied with IP-based storage systems. Firms should evaluate IP-based storage first when deploying new or upgrading existing networked storage.
