A Security Physical For European Telcos

Applying ISO 17799 Reveals Disturbing Anomalies For Internal Security

This is the first document in the "European Telco Internal Security" series.

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

Considering the fact that most customers trust their telecommunications providers almost to the point of oblivion, telco security is in bad shape. A highly competitive telco climate characterized by consolidation, shrinking margins, and 3G challenges has produced relatively poor security inside almost all European telecommunications companies. But successful telcos are beginning to realize that proper internal security is a must and that a healthy security infrastructure is a key competitive differentiator — even a business enabler. As customers are extremely sensitive to security breaches at their trusted providers, many European telcos are beginning to tighten the nuts and bolts of their security infrastructure, which is good news. They are evaluating — or re-evaluating — their internal security posture and overall approach to protecting customer information and internal processes. When doing so, firms prefer to use security standards like ISO 17799. This framework helps establish a holistic security baseline and, if desired, also acts as a seal of quality that the provider can use as a marketing tool.
