Gen X And Gen Y Can't Live Without Their PCs

Which Devices Can't Consumers Live Without? TVs Lead Overall, Cell Phones Lag

by Ted Schadler

with Sally M. Cohen, Katherine Brown

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

When it comes to the most important devices in US consumers' lives, TV is still on top, followed by PCs and cell phones. But for consumers aged 40 and younger, PCs lead the must-have list. The same is true for online households and for households making $75,000 or more per year: Nearly one-third of these affluent consumers rank the PC as more important than the TV. And for Gen Yers — consumers between the ages of 18 and 26 — PCs and cell phones are more important than TVs. Home stereos make the cut for 4% of households overall, but no other single device garners more than 1% of respondents.
