In just the past three years, we've seen the features available in integration-centric business process management suites (IC-BPMSes) rapidly evolve well beyond their enterprise application integration (EAI) roots. This raises the question of whether today's users are taking advantage of their tool's potential. During the 2008 Forrester Wave™ evaluation of IC-BPMSes, we interviewed 20 customers using the leading products in the market and polled them on which features they were using. The results reveal broad adoption of various IC-BPMS components, including those that support business process management (BPM), service-oriented architecture (SOA), application development, event management, and EAI efforts. Business-to-business (B2B) components are the least used, with just half of the interviewees using B2B-related features. Enterprise architects should use this information to guide the development of a comprehensive integration environment in their enterprises.
