The Four Decision Factors For Open Source Enterprise Content Management

by Stephen Powers

with Matthew Brown, Jeffrey S. Hammond, Peter Schmidt

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

Open source enterprise content management (ECM) initiatives are common in small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) or in department-level projects. Yet information and knowledge management (I&KM) professionals in major enterprises have started to consider how they can leverage open source ECM to cut costs. Will low-cost open source ECM licenses lead to lower total cost of ownership (TCO) than commercial alternatives? This report finds that open source best serves business content rather than transactional or persuasive content. Thus, I&KM pros must consider three additional factors when estimating TCO and deciding whether or not to use open source ECM: support, available resources, and product maturity.
