IT In The Public Sector In Australia

Benchmarking Your Practice Against Your Global Peers

by Tim Sheedy

with Christine Ferrusi Ross, Sharyn Leaver, Elizabeth Rose

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

With the tightening of IT budgets in the Australian federal government due to the review of IT operations by Sir Peter Gershon, the considerable consolidation of public sector agencies at the state level, and the considerable drop in tax revenues brought on by the global financial crisis, a "perfect storm" of pain has been dished out to IT departments across the entire Australian public sector. However, to date, these departments have responded admirably, tightening their belts as required, but not losing focus on the issues that affect their government departments and public sector agencies and their customers and constituents both now and in the future. For many IT departments in the public sector, now might in fact be a good time to consider redesigning their IT function to embrace the new sourcing models that public sector bodies are likely to adopt over the next few years.
