The Battle For Beltshare

Cell Phones Take Priority Over PDAs, Digital Cameras, And Portable Audio

by Charles S. Golvin

with Sally M. Cohen

Executive Summary (This is a document excerpt)

Most consumers will only regularly carry one device with them when they leave home: their cell phone. As more devices follow the trend of smaller, lighter design, consumers will expand their beltshare — the number of devices they are willing to regularly carry with them outside of the home — but will remain devoted to their cell phone. For device manufacturers, this means two things: Smaller devices will encourage consumers to favor a 1:1 ratio of functions to devices, but when convergence makes sense, communication should be the primary function of a portable gadget.
