Michael Goulde
Forrester Research


Research Focus

Michael primarily contributes to Forrester's offerings for the Application Development and Program Management professional and is a frequent contributor to the Enterprise Architect professional role. Michael researches a broad range of topics, including open source software, use of open source-derived methodologies in corporate development, analyzing how open source fits into firms' software strategies, both from a strategic architectural strategy and from tactical benefits perspective. He has written about the greater open source ecosystem, open source licensing and license compliance, open source policy for IT and for application developers. He has researched collaborative development communities and dozens of the projects they have produced. A related interest of is discovering what aspects of open source methodology and business models can be used to support innovation in other settings.

Michael will soon be researching Web application frameworks and enterprise service bus technologies. His research also includes providing understanding of the evolving business models that support open source products. Although open source is a relatively recent phenomenon in IT, Michael has begun to identify key best practices and has research in progress about them.

Previous Work Experience

Michael brings more than 20 years of experience as an IT industry analyst and consultant to his role at Forrester. He began his career at the Yankee Group where he covered topics ranging from the emergence of personal computing as a key IT strategy for enterprises to early Local Area Networks and multi-user Unix systems. Subsequently, he joined BIS CAP International where he created its corporate information solutions service, which focused on research and consulting of leading-edge document image management technologies at large corporations. He joined Open Systems Advisors at time when open systems were a concern among many large, global customers. Subsequently, at the Patricia Seybold Group he led the Open Information Systems and Internet Tools and Technology newsletters and was VP of research. He spent nearly four years at Microsoft in the Windows Server product management group doing competitive marketing strategy and product planning before joining Forrester Research in 2005.
Over the course of his career, Michael has worked with the public sector, such as the International Monetary Fund and the State of Delaware, and with firms in the private sector, in industries as diverse as pharmaceuticals, insurance, systems integration, retail, and health care. One consistent theme in his consulting work has been the adoption of new technologies to support business goals. His current focus on open source software is a continuation of that work.
Michael has spoken at conferences, customer seminars, and internal training meetings on four continents. He is frequently sought out by the press to provide commentary on industry events and how they impact enterprises. His column, "Source Tree," was a monthly feature in Enterprise Open Source Journal.

Education

Michael has earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Science degree from Rutgers University, and an MBA from Northeastern University. He was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society for business in 1985.
