Event Overview

Overview

One of the hottest trends in software today is the emergence of Web 2.0 tools and technologies. Growing up in the wake of the dot-com bust, Web 2.0 began as a user-focused revolution, remaking the consumer Web into a landscape that is easy to use, efficient to navigate, populated by self-generated content (versus institutional publications) and driven by ad hoc and established communities of people with similar interests. Tools like blogs, wikis, RSS, mashups, and social networks are all focused on creating powerful interaction engines for people in a simple, intuitive package.

Having generated clear success on the public Internet, the question becomes whether or not these tools add business value. While some early successes for these tools in the enterprise show promise for the future, business usage of Web 2.0 tools creates significantly different challenges than people interacting with one another through the Internet. Success in the latter arena does not ensure success in the enterprise. However, Web 2.0 tools offer a fundamentally new approach to information creation, publishing, aggregation, discovery, and validation, in large part because people ¿ rather than institutions ¿ create much of the content. The role of Information & Knowledge Management professionals will be to weigh the value of these tools and, where appropriate, create a strategy and implementation plan that mitigates accompanying risk.

Who Should Attend?
