Executive Summary

Compared with North American enterprises, fewer North American SMBs have adopted voice over IP (VoIP). However, given their strong interest in stretching tight budgets, SMBs are excellent candidates for VoIP — if suppliers can create cost-effective solutions. SMBs recognize and appreciate the value that outside expertise can provide. Consequently, they are 2.5 to three times as interested in both managed IP telephony and managed site-to-site VoIP services than are enterprises. SMBs are particularly interested in architectural solutions that provide an evolutionary, not revolutionary, path to VoIP. This supports their preference for using IP telephony (IPT) solutions from current IP PBX vendors. Many already buy multiple WAN services from a single provider and use T1 access. Even among SMBs, interest in VoIP varies by size and industry. Suppliers that focus their offers on the union of these preferences will have a competitive edge in a large market yet to be dominated by any single supplier.
