Add SWaP To The Server Benchmark Battlefield

by Brad Day

with Simon Yates, Thomas Powell

This is an excerpt

Executive Summary

When it launched the new UltraSPARC T1 chip and the CoolThreads server rack design last month, Sun Microsystems also introduced a new metric for measuring server efficiency called space, wattage, and performance (SWaP). SWaP addresses the challenge of optimizing server performance and efficiency in the data center. The metric adds yet another plausible benchmark to consider when measuring the cost efficiencies of one server rack against competitors, but it won't carry much weight until Sun challenges competitors to use the metric in a consistent and reliable manner and, ultimately, Sun turns responsibility for the metric to an independent body.
