AT&T And Cisco Systems Announce An Intercompany Telepresence Service

by Claire Schooley, Henry Dewing

Executive Summary

Cisco Systems recently forged ahead of the competition by making Cisco TelePresence, its lifelike, "you are there" videoconferencing technology, available through AT&T. Information and knowledge management (I&KM) professionals who have contemplated telepresence (high-end videoconferencing) products should examine this end-to-end managed service option — especially if they're already AT&T customers. Companies that buy AT&T telepresence, which is sold as an AT&T service, can now connect point-to-point to any telepresence room anywhere on the AT&T network — and multipoint will be available in Q3 2008. Before this partnership, Cisco TelePresence was available only internally, but Cisco TelePresence customers can now use the AT&T network-based bridging to connect to other telepresence endpoints within and outside of the organization. Forrester anticipates similar offerings from vendors like BT Group, which has announced a September 2008 telepresence service with Cisco. In 2009, we expect universal connection to telepresence units from any of the telepresence vendors that support the standards and that do not have proprietary technology.
