Executive Summary

In December 2006, Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) announced that it had taken a minority ownership stake and established an OEM relationship with niche network-attached storage (NAS) player BlueArc Corporation. The partnership helps HDS bring to market BlueArc's mature NAS product, bolstered by the customer services and support of HDS to better compete with NAS market leaders EMC and Network Appliance. Firms evaluating high-performance NAS offerings now have the option of a product that leads the industry in performance and scalability, without the risks associated with purchasing from a privately held emerging player with uncertain financial footing. Establishing this credibility depends heavily on HDS's successful execution of and long-term commitment to the partnership, but firms that require the advanced file storage capabilities offered by the BlueArc product should consider this new offering as an option.
