Executive Summary

Over the years, BMC Software has evolved from business service management (BSM) thought leader to BSM market leader. With BSM now a mainstream proposition, BMC is able to reap the benefits, becoming a strategic partner for many accounts. But no light can be cast without a shadow: While BMC's configuration management database (CMDB) leads the market in terms of implementations and overall capabilities, the autodiscovery and application mapping technology is less mature than the competition and needs further investment. BMC also needs to answer the question: "What comes after BSM?" The company needs a fresh vision for 2010 and beyond. To that end, Forrester believes that BMC should aggressively expand its activities in the area of IT process automation.
