by Michael Rasmussen

with Jennifer Albornoz Mulligan, Laura Koetzle, Sarah Bernhardt

Executive Summary

The third step in implementing a privacy program is to specify a governance structure of privacy policies, procedures, and practices. The specifics? Detail what personal information will be collected and how you will use it in your privacy policy. Communicate your practices to both customers and employees. Document the guidelines for appropriate and inappropriate information sharing with real-world examples. Review your privacy policy regularly and make changes to address new requirements. Privacy program teams must document and review all policy exceptions. Make the vague concept of privacy awareness part of employees' daily work by providing concrete examples of procedures and practices as well as offering them support by designating staff to answer all privacy questions. Finally, a world-class privacy program will include regular use of eLearning systems to communicate privacy policies and practices out to employees and business partners.
