Build Your Privacy Program: Privacy Information Architecture

by Michael Rasmussen

with Jennifer Albornoz Mulligan, Laura Koetzle, Sarah Bernhardt

This is an excerpt

Executive Summary

Privacy programs must define privacy information architecture. This architecture maps the flow of personal information through all of your organization's business processes and specifies restrictions on the use of that information inside your firm. Specifically, you must protect private data from disclosure at any step along its journey. Thus, privacy program teams must identify information that needs protection and label it as such. Plan your strategy for ensuring confidentiality of personal information throughout the entire life cycle: information collection, processing, transfer, and destruction. Clearly assign responsibility for following these procedures internally and with partners. Although classifying information and following strict procedures is difficult, it will reduce your risk and liability for private information exposure.
