Executive Summary

Like most financial institutions, Canada's CIBC is looking for ways to increase consumers' security and trust while banking online. CIBC recently began offering online banking customers free downloads of Rapport, an application from security vendor Trusteer. Rapport uses a combination of access control, encryption, and verification tools to lock down a customer's browser against malware-based phishing attacks like man-in-the-browser and man-in-the-middle. CIBC's experience shows what can be accomplished with an opt-in approach to downloadable security plug-ins.
