Executive Summary

Increased competition for online customers in North America, combined with Europe's growing eCommerce trade, is causing firms to re-evaluate their commerce platforms. But that doesn't mean that the commerce platform market will explode. Instead, Forrester expects it to grow modestly from $1.2 billion in 2003 to $1.4 billion by 2008 as firms shift existing eCommerce funds from custom development projects and small specialists to platform and application vendors. Firms must consider their IT resources, strategies, and the magnitude of their commerce site before deciding which option to go with. In early 2005, Forrester will evaluate the top commerce platforms, putting pure plays head-to-head with platform and CRM application vendors to help firms make an informed decision.
