Overall, Derby offers good DBMS features and functionality with comprehensive support for embedded Java databases in the areas of programmability, interfaces, data types, and administration. With IBM and, more recently, Sun Microsystems supporting Derby under their own brand names, the adoption of Derby has seen some traction, but it still lags behind other open source projects. Derby is best suited for customers that want to use a data repository for Java applications, or require a small footprint with zero-administration functionality.
