Executive Summary

As one of the creators of the eSourcing application, Ariba continues to be an eSourcing leader. Its eSourcing suite is strong in all functional areas, with ties (or near ties) for top scores in supplier discovery, RFx/reverse auctions, sourcing decision, and sourcing activity management. It stands out in features like integration (where it offers the most extensive range of integration support) and hosted options (where it provides the widest and deepest choice of alternatives, from fully-managed hosted sourcing to self-service shared-instance hosting and hosting of licensed software). On the other hand, its functions for spend analysis, supplier assessment, and sophisticated bid optimization, while very good, are still slightly behind Emptoris and, in spend analysis, behind Verticalnet. Ariba is committed to maintaining a leadership position, and it has the financial resources and focus to succeed. Indeed, with its recent announcement of hosted, on-demand sourcing service aimed at the SMB market, Ariba has opened up a new growth opportunity.
