Executive Summary

The GNU General Public License, or GPL, is the most widely used open source license in the industry. Its terms are straightforward, and yet there are two commonly held misconceptions that often leave people confused and at risk for making incorrect decisions. The first misconception is that the GPL requires free distribution of both source code and binary code. It does not. The second misconception is that once software has been distributed under the GPL, GPL is the only license under which the software can be distributed. In fact, there are no limits on how many ways you can license material for which you hold the copyright.
