Executive Summary

A handful of large organizations have begun to develop Information Workplace (IW) strategies — a focus on the digital workplace of the future, which will be seamless, guided, visual, role-based, multimodal, and aware of the physical world. IBM is one of the few large companies that have not only developed an IW strategy but have also begun to implement one. IBM's IW strategy centers on role-based portals, which the company has already rolled out to nearly one-third of its workforce. The company has already gained value from increased information worker productivity and a more knowledgeable workforce overall. Also, IBM's hands-on experience developing and implementing its IW strategy, in combination with its services and software offerings, positions the company as a premier provider of IW services and solutions to medium-size and large organizations.
