Ingres Leads In Open Source Databases

The Forrester Wave™ Vendor Summary, Q2 2006

by Noel Yuhanna

with Mike Gilpin, Megan Daniels

This is an excerpt

Executive Summary

Ingres remains the most comprehensive open source database project with good coverage in transaction processing, availability, security, programmability, and data warehousing, but it lags in complete in-memory database support and ease of use. Ingres has the longest history among all open source database projects, spanning more than two decades, but it has largely been a commercial database product. Last year, Ingres was spun off from CA to form an independent entity, which will help revive its focus and develop the much-needed ecosystem to compete against MySQL. Ingres best suits customers that are looking for databases to meet high-volume transactions for online transaction processing (OLTP) applications, and want to build small to midsize data warehouses.
