Executive Summary

Infrastructure and operations (I&O) departments are currently in a state of flux. Beyond increasing centralization, I&O departments are reorganizing to become service-oriented or are at least considering such a change. Why? When surveyed, IT executives cite improved operations as the most critical enabler to the business viewing IT more positively — especially improved network and systems reliability and improved consistency and quality of IT processes. And as I&O leaders plan for a reorganization or adjust to their newly implemented changes, Forrester has received 79 inquiries from IT practitioners on I&O organizational structures. Reporting structures was the most common interest, followed by staffing, new roles, skills, and recruiting.
