Executive Summary

The cost and complexity of integration projects can be significantly reduced through the use of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) that facilitates efficient reuse of system and application components by defining them as services that can be requested through an industry-standard protocol. Such architecture also promotes other objectives, such as greater flexibility to enable faster response to change and acceleration of development projects that reuse existing services. SOA also contributes to greater unification of integration and development activities within a single consistent approach and runtime infrastructure. Moving forward, the availability of new standards and the maturation of implementations of existing and new standards will further enhance the value proposition of SOA, both in the broader context and in the more specific context of integration.
