Executive Summary

The three keys for starting down the road to service-oriented architecture (SOA) are: 1) adopt an evolutionary approach; 2) focus on business pain points; and 3) use street-level strategy to get there. Within this broad framework, there are different key starting steps for project- and enterprise-level SOA. Those doing project-level SOA can jump right in with a narrow focus on the key services the project will use or deliver, using the project's service requirements to drive SOA infrastructure investments. Enterprise-level SOA requires more preparation and coordination with a more formal approach to service portfolio planning, SOA platform planning, and SOA governance.
