KPN Takes On Cable TV: Good Move

But Triple Play Faces An Uphill Struggle

by Hellen K. Omwando, Lars Godell

Executive Summary

KPN made the right move in requesting access to Dutch cable TV networks; this will enable it to roll out a full triple-play offering. But Forrester expects KPN to be more successful in deflecting the focus of cablecos' senior management than in the triple-play marketplace itself. We think it will be tough for KPN to capture many triple-play customers from cable TV networks in the next five years. The key reasons? Consumer apathy and cableco stonewalling. And the triple-play business case remains largely unproven. Over time, Forrester expects the industry's focus to move beyond triple play to a quadruple play that will include mobile in the voice, video, and data bundle.
