Market Mayhem

What the Current Shakeout Means for Jupiter's Forecasts

with Vipul Patel, David Card, Evan Cohen, Edward Kahn

This is an excerpt

Executive Summary

The Internet economy has been shaken to its core by two distinct phenomena: the dot-com shakeout and a sudden slowdown in US economic growth. The days of sky-high valuations for money-losing online ventures have been consigned to history. Internet companies must now demonstrate profitability, or a clear path to it, or risk near-term financial oblivion. This challenge alone would probably be enough to sweep away many firms, but coupled with the current economic slowdown—which was partly brought on by the bursting of the technology bubble—the situation looks all the more bleak.
