Attacks on enterprise databases continue at an all-time high despite security professionals taking measures to protect them. Although database management system (DBMS) security continues to improve, gaps remain in providing real-time protection, proactively monitoring suspicious activities, concealing data from internal users including database administrators (DBAs), and centralizing audit and security activities that span databases. Forrester predicts that the database security market will grow at approximately 21% annually through 2012, with leading DBMS vendors such as Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, and Sybase extending native security features while independent vendors such as Application Security, Camouflage, Guardium, Imperva, Secerno, Sentrigo, and Tizor Systems fill gaps. Oracle continues to dominate among DBMS vendors by offering the most-advanced security features. Security professionals should begin with native database security and then fill additional requirements using independent vendor solutions.
