Maximizing WLAN Investments With Real-Time Location-Based Services

Leveraging An Existing IT Asset For Cost Control, Security, And Tracking

by Chris Silva

with Simon Yates, Rachel Batiancila

Executive Summary

Real-time location-based services (RTLS) have arrived and can be easier to deploy on existing WLANs than voice services. In addition to making use of a planned or already implemented IT asset, the returns from investments in WLAN technology can be extended to areas such as audit and compliance, security, and asset tracking — all capabilities well-suited to current RTLS solutions. While WLAN deployments can take advantage of basic location information native to the WLAN, implementing third-party location tools can add significant value. IT managers are advised to use the potential for location-based services as a means to bolster the business case for WLAN deployment or expansion. In all scenarios, planning for services such as location will increase the utility of the WLAN and help to avoid costly and time-consuming network architecture retrofits later on. A phased rollout plan, preceded by detailed site survey and coverage assessment of WLAN signal strength, will ensure a successful RTLS implementation.
