Mexx Localizes for European Markets, While Centralizing to Keep Costs in Check

by Zia Daniell Wigder

Executive Summary

Liz Claiborne–owned Mexx is a Dutch-based retailer with 9,000 outlets in more than 50 countries. During the past five years, Liz Claiborne's international sales rose 59 percent to almost $1.5 billion in 2007, largely due to the continued expansion of Mexx Europe and Mexx Canada. Although Mexx has struggled in some areas—shutting US stores last year, with plans to close all UK stores in summer 2008—the company remains bullish about its online operations. MexxDirect, the company's online division, operates online commerce sites in Germany, the Netherlands, and France. Later in 2008, the company will launch a site in Belgium, and one in Austria will likely follow.
