In a surprise move, Microsoft announced that it is changing its strategy with respect to the hotly contested business performance solutions (BPS) market. After investing in developing and launching Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 (PerformancePoint), the company is essentially abandoning the product and shifting functional components to other lines of business. By making PerformancePoint analytics and performance monitoring into a "service" that is included in the SharePoint enterprise license, Microsoft hopes to achieve its vision of bringing business intelligence (BI) and business performance management to the masses. The other major component of PerformancePoint, financial planning and consolidation, is due for a service pack update midyear and then will be put into a holding pattern.
