Many supply chain processes that used to be managed within the enterprise now span dozens of global trading partners, each focused on a set of specialized areas. This shift toward network-centric processes has nullified many of the assumptions used in traditional supply chain management (SCM) tools like inventory management and frameworks like collaborative planning forecasting and replenishment (CPFR). Firms can now take advantage of newly available granular data like store-level consumption or in-transit inventory, minimizing their reliance on historically based forecasts. These changing dynamics have led to the realization that functional solutions will constantly change to meet new challenges and leverage newly available data. Orchestrating trading partners to best handle a disruptive event will persist as a need. Firms will be able to meet this need by building network process control: the ability to define and manage the rules governing how trading partners can collectively sense and respond to changes in supply and demand.
